Effect of PMS and PMDD on Mental Health.

Every woman faces mood swings, anxiety, headaches, Bloating, and many more problems before or during the menstruation cycle. Approximately more than 90% of women face at least one problem during the menstruation cycle . But for some women, these problems prove to be a feeling of discomfort, which often affects mental health. Approximately 3 to 5% of women face the problem of PMDD. Sometimes, a woman will not be able to understand whether it is PMS or PMDD. If a woman is suffering from PMDD, she should consult a doctor and take the proper medication with lifestyle changes.

Whether it is PMDD or PMS, it harmed both physical and mental health. In fact, PMDD is more dangerous than PMS. It is said that 1 out of 20 women suffer from PMDD. Causes of PMS and PMDD:

PMS:

PMS or Premenstrual syndrome is the physical and Psychological symptoms that women experience before one or two weeks before starting the Menstruation Cycle or Periods. The causes of PMS are still not known by experts. But it is said that PMS is caused due to changes in the hormone level before periods. When ovulation happens, the hormone is named Estrogen, and Progesterone decreases. This can be the root cause of PMS which has a severe effect on mental health as well as physical health.

PMDD:

PMDD is Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. When a woman experiences symptoms that prevent them from daily functioning in everyday life. The significant difference between PMS and PMDD is its severity. PMDD is a disease that can affect the daily life and living of a woman. It is a chronic condition that requires treatment when it happens. It can also threaten women’s mental health. PMDD is caused due to abnormal brain response to the hormonal changes during periods. This leads to a deficiency in the neurotransmitter serotonin.

Symptoms of PMS and PMDD:

PMS:
Abdominal Bloating:

 It is a condition where you will feel your abdominal full and tight. Even your belly may look swollen.

Abdominal Pain:

 It is a pain that occurs between the chest and pelvic region. It can be in the form of cramps, achy, dull, intermittent, or sharp. 

Sore Breast: 

This can cause due to an increase in the level of Estrogen and Progesterone hormone. It leads to your breast to swollen and also tenderness.

Food Cravings: 

It is an intense desire to consume a specific food, but it’s totally different from normal hunger.

Constipation: 

It is a situation where one finds difficulty in emptying the bowels.

Anxiety:

Anxiety occurs due to distress and uneasiness of mind. It is caused by fear of danger or misfortune. Women’s mental health get disturbed due to anxiety.

Other symptoms include Fatigue, Irritability, changes in sleep patterns, depression, sadness, and emotional outburst which again have a severe effect on mental health. It also hinders the working of day to day life of a women.

  • Dizziness
  • Muscle spasms
  • Numbness or tingling in the extremities

  • Heighten sensitivity.

Treatment:

PMS and PMDD should be treated as soon as you feel the above symptoms. Proper medications and therapy will work magic to cure the problem of PMS and PMDD. On the other hand, lifestyle changes such as yoga and exercise will help you overcome the problem. A healthy and timely diet will also help you to get rid of PMS and PMDD.

 

PMS and PMDD can harm your mental health. Symptoms such as depression have a severe impact on your life. Lack of concentration may leave you with no job and opportunities in your hand. Lack of coordination may create disputes in your home or office, and it will also affect your status in society.
