How Phthalates affects Human Health and Environment?

Recently a news headline stated that baby diapers contain toxic chemicals that harm the health of babies. Alka Dubey, the program coordinator at Toxics Link, said that in the samples of baby diapers, DEHP, one of the most toxic phthalates, was found in the product that ranges from 2.36ppm to 302.25ppm.

What are Phthalates?

Phthalate is a kind of synthetic chemical used in a variety of consumer products, including medical devices, food wrap, building materials, packaging, automotive parts, and children’s toys. The study reveals that the annual product of Phthalates is around 11 billion pounds. Six of the most used are:

  • DEHP (Di-(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate)
  • DINP (diisononyl Phthalate)
  • DBP (dibutyl plasticizer)
  • DIDP (diisodecyl plasticizer)
  • DnOP (di-n-octyl plasticizer)
  • BBP or BBP (benzyl butyl plasticizer)

How does Phthalate affect human health?

Excessive exposure to Phthalate causes various problems to human health, such as:

  • Male reproductive malformation
  • Sperm damage
  • Fertility impairment
  • Female reproductive tract diseases
  • Early puberty in girls
  • Asthma
  • Thyroid effects
  • Adverse effect on the lungs, liver, and kidneys.

Effects of Phthalate on Environment:

The study reveals that exposure to Phthalate can pose severe challenges to the environment. It harms aquatic life and the terrestrial ecosystem. BBP plasticizer may have endocrine-disrupting effects in fish. DBP is highly toxic to marine life.

One of the compelling ways is to Install Solid Waste Incinerators to prevent the exposure of Phthalate in the environment.

Solid waste Incinerators are devices that dispose of solid waste in an eco-friendly and effective manner. Incinerator machines dispose of the trash by burning it inside the machine. It has a smoke absorption unit that absorbs the smoke emitted while burning the waste, hence preventing the exposure of smoke to the environment. Materials that contain plasticizer chemicals should be incinerated to save the environment from the harmful effects of the chemical.
